Tiger Woods Has Blunt Response To Retirement Suggestion Before Open Championship
“Aren’t we there? I’d have thought we were past there,” Montgomerie said. “There is a time for all sportsmen to say goodbye, but it’s very difficult to tell Tiger it’s time to go. Obviously, he still feels he can win. We are more realistic.”
Speaking to reporters Tuesday morning ahead of this week’s Open Championship. Woods had a biting response to Montgomerie’s comments.
“Well, as a past champion, I’m exempt until I’m 60. Colin’s not,” Woods said, via Kyle Porter of CBS Sports. “He’s not a past champion, so he’s not exempt. So he doesn’t get the opportunity to make that decision. I do.”
At 48, Woods has another 12 years to automatically qualify for the Open Championship. He also has lifetime exemptions to the Masters and PGA Championship.
While his U.S. Open exemption expired, Woods received a special exemption to compete at Pinehurst in May. He missed the cut for the second straight major.
Since returning in 2022, Woods has either missed the cut or withdrawn from five of seven majors. He finished 60th in the Masters with the highest 72-hole score (+16) of his decorated career.
Montgomerie doesn’t want people to remember this version of Tiger.
“These guys only know Tiger Woods missing the cut, and he’s better than that,” Montgomerie said. “The best we’ve ever seen.”
