American Airlines Schedules Airbus A321T Flights Between Los Angeles & Toronto For International Film Festival

American Airlines’ Airbus A321T will serve Toronto for a limited time in September.
The carrier faces competition from Air Canada and WestJet on the route.
The A321T subfleet will soon be reconfigured and replaced by A321XLRs.
American Airlines’ most luxurious narrowbody aircraft – the Airbus A321 Transcon (A321T) – will be visiting Toronto, Canada, for a limited time next month. The Fort Worth, Texas-based carrier has scheduled the aircraft to accommodate increased demand for the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).

It is not the first time the carrier has deployed its specially modified A321s on the route for the special event. Additionally, American previously offered regularly scheduled flights between the two destinations, but axed the service in 2018.

“Easier and more convenient”
According to aviation analytics and data firm Cirium, the carrier will operate 12 flights between Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) in September. Six flights will operate in each direction, offering 612 seats. In total, the airline has 1,224 seats scheduled on the route.

This year is the 49th edition of the TIFF. The event is one of the largest film festivals in the world and typically lasts over a week. It begins on September 5th and will run until the 15th this year and American will operate flights before, during, and at the end of the event. The flights are scheduled to operate from September 4th-6th, 8th-9th, and 15th.

The airline confirmed the development in a statement to Simple Flying on Friday.

“In September, American added more seats and additional frequencies to Toronto to make it easier and more convenient for movie fans and industry professionals to attend the city’s annual festival. We are delighted to offer customers the chance to experience Flagship products with special nonstop service from Los Angeles to Toronto on an Airbus A321T, featuring lie-flat seating.”

Competition on the route
American will compete against Air Canada and WestJet, which operate multiple daily frequencies on the route. Air Canada also operates its Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner on the route, which has lie-flat seats and more capacity. Porter Airlines operates the route once daily on the Embraer E195-E2. American formerly operated regularly scheduled daily flights between LAX and YYZ. In 2015, the airline deployed its A319s on the route, replacing the 737-800. The carrier operated the route through the end of 2018. In January 2019, it did not return, according to Cirium.

Despite pulling the route, American still offered limited-time service for the TIFF on the A321Ts, and has typically operated the same schedule each year, except for a two-year hiatus in 2020 and 2021 during the pandemic. In 2022, the carrier re-instated the special service with 14 flights. Last year, it operated the same amount, while this year, the airline will have two fewer frequencies.

Saying goodbye to the A321T
Since 2014, American has operated a subfleet of 16 A321Ts, exclusively flying on transcontinental routes to Boston, Los Angeles, New York, Orange County, and San Francisco. The A321T configuration comprises 102 seats and is the only single-aisle aircraft in the US to feature a three-class layout.

The modified aircraft will soon be stripped of their premium features, reconfigured to American’s standard A321 layout, and deployed on non-transcontinental routes. They are set to be replaced by A321XLRs, albeit American has not yet stated a timeline for the deliveries. One A321T has already been converted to the standard A321 configuration.
