Former New Orleans Saints Legends Drew Brees and Reggie Bush Express Strong Interest in Coaching Together, Signaling Potential Return to NFL Sidelines as a Dynamic Coaching…

In what could become one of the most compelling coaching stories in modern NFL history, former New Orleans Saints stars Drew Brees and Reggie Bush have both expressed a strong interest in returning to the game—not as players, but as coaches, and potentially as a team.

During recent media appearances, both Super Bowl XLIV champions opened up about their growing desire to get back into football in a new capacity. The two former Saints, who played pivotal roles in the franchise’s only Super Bowl win, say they’d be open—and eager—to reunite on the sidelines as part of a future NFL coaching staff.

“I would 100% be in full support of Drew coaching the Saints,” Reggie Bush said during an appearance on Up & Adams, a popular football talk show hosted by Kay Adams. “Also, 100% want to coach with him.”

That sentiment, it turns out, is mutual. Brees, who retired from the NFL in 2021 after a 20-year career—15 of those with New Orleans—responded with a mix of warmth and realism.

“I just don’t think the league is ready for us right now,” Brees said, smiling. “But if the right situation comes along… who knows?”

While neither Brees nor Bush have held formal coaching roles in the NFL to date, both have remained close to the game. Brees briefly served as an analyst for NBC Sports following his retirement before stepping away to focus on family and business interests. Bush, meanwhile, built a strong presence as a college football analyst with FOX Sports, gaining respect for his insights and charisma on the broadcast team.

Their potential coaching partnership raises intriguing questions about how former elite players can transition into coaching roles, especially in the NFL, where the leap from the field to the sideline isn’t as common as it is in leagues like the NBA.

Bush touched on that exact issue during his appearance, noting that the NFL has traditionally been slower to welcome former players—particularly skill-position stars—into coaching roles.

“You see the NBA all the time hiring ex-players as head coaches, assistants, development guys,” Bush said. “In the NFL, it’s more rare. But the knowledge, the leadership, the locker room understanding—it’s all there.”

Indeed, both Brees and Bush are widely regarded as high football IQ players who understood the game far beyond their natural talent. Brees, a 13-time Pro Bowler, is one of the most prolific passers in NFL history, while Bush brought a unique dual-threat ability to the backfield that influenced how running backs are used in modern offenses.

The idea of them coaching together—perhaps even in New Orleans—has fans buzzing, especially in light of the Saints’ recent struggles. With mounting questions around the team’s current direction and leadership, speculation around a future where legends return to help right the ship has become a compelling fantasy.

Still, there are significant hurdles. Coaching, especially at the NFL level, is a grind that requires time, preparation, and often years of behind-the-scenes development. While their playing résumés are sparkling, both Brees and Bush would likely need to start in smaller roles—possibly as assistants or consultants—before stepping into any major leadership positions.

Some have speculated that the two could test the waters at the college level, particularly at schools where they have strong ties—Purdue for Brees, and USC for Bush. However, neither has confirmed any current talks or official opportunities.

Meanwhile, the Saints organization has not publicly addressed the prospect of a Brees-Bush coaching tandem. Recent reports have suggested that the team is considering Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore for a major role, but no final decision has been made.

For now, the notion of a Brees-Bush coaching duo remains in the realm of possibility and speculation—but it’s one with growing momentum and fan support.

“I love this game too much to stay away forever,” Brees said in a recent interview. “Coaching is something I think about more and more. But it has to be the right time, the right team—and the right people.”

If and when that time comes, one thing is clear: Reggie Bush will be ready to stand beside him.
