4 overreactions to the Chiefs’ pitiful loss to the Broncos in Week 8
Chiefs Kingdom all heard about Mahomes’ flu diagnosis mere hours before Sunday’s kickoff. Yet the reaction was not one of fear or concern. It was one of unbridled confidence in the two-time NFL MVP.
Most fans would be unsettled, at least, upon hearing their starting quarterback was sick the night before the game and on IV fluids the morning of the game. Yet, basketball fans have seen Chicago Bulls legend Michael Jordan perform while sick with the flu. The immediate reaction predicted Mahomes would recreate Jordan’s legendary performance, this time extending the Chiefs’ lengthy winning streak over Denver.
Those predictions did not come to life, and, for the first time in awhile, Mahomes looked mortal.
I couldn’t imagine playing with the flu. I turn into a coach potato, whining about any uncomfortable thing. This man is out here playing professional football in a hostile environment. But still grading Mahomes on his curve, he did not look like the generational talent we are all used to. It was his first game without a passing touchdown since Dec. 5, 2021 against, oddly enough, the Denver Broncos.
His fumble late in the second quarter came off a brutal hit but ended a surefire scoring drive. His two interceptions gave Denver short fields to work with and assisted a below-average Denver offense. It is not premature to call this Mahomes’ worst game ever. It was not all his fault, but this is a moment that should make Chiefs fans appreciate his brilliant performances even more.
